Handoff — Codex conversation handoff for saved local projects

Handoff is a macOS Codex desktop skill that packs necessary context and creates a continuation chat in the same saved Local project. The current public source is Alpha.

When a handoff helps

Explicitly invoke handoff when a long conversation needs a fresh continuation that retains its goals and decisions. The record carries goals, recent decisions, done and todo items, constraints, file paths and evidence.

Original files remain in place and the receiver reads them as needed. Summarization does not preserve every detail perfectly or guarantee a drift-free new conversation.

Use a saved local project

The public setup requires macOS Codex desktop, Python 3.9+, a saved Local project, file write access and the required native project/chat tool permissions. Install the complete handoff directory as documented in the repository.

Select the skill explicitly or use its documented command in the current project. Casual mentions, maintenance notes and skill tests do not trigger it. This page explains the workflow and does not execute a handoff.

Check the actual launch result

The skill verifies the project, saves a handoff record, attempts to create a continuation chat and returns the chat link plus actual launch status. Failed or unclear creation keeps the record and explains the cause rather than blindly creating duplicates.

The receiver verifies existing project files and unfinished work before continuing. Stay in the original conversation when fine-grained continuous discussion remains useful.

Public scope

The source is Alpha; consult CHANGELOG for the exact build. Summary quality depends on the source conversation and agent, and end-to-end time savings versus alternatives have not been measured.

The skill does not add a separate approval layer or change permissions. It depends on the desktop client and host tools, and is not validated for every agent or client.
