System Settings

Before you start

  • Record the gestures currently configured on the target Mac before changing the dragging style.

Settings path

System Settings › Accessibility › Pointer Control › Trackpad Options › Use trackpad for dragging › Dragging style › Three Finger Drag

Steps

  1. Open System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control > Trackpad Options.
  2. Turn on “Use trackpad for dragging,” select Three-Finger Drag under Dragging style, then click OK.
  3. After enabling it, open Trackpad > More Gestures and inspect the actual gesture assignments. On the target Mac used for this guide, conflicting gestures changed to four fingers automatically, but this may differ by device or macOS version.
  4. If the system shows four-finger gestures, swipe up with four fingers to open Mission Control and swipe down with four fingers to open App Exposé.
  5. In Finder, drag a test file or window with three fingers, click or tap to drop it, and confirm that Mission Control and App Exposé still work as shown in your current settings.

Before

Dragging a file, folder, or window requires holding the trackpad down while moving a finger. Long drags can feel constrained or require repositioning.

After

With Three Finger Drag enabled, use three fingers to drag an item, then click or tap to drop it at the destination.

Things to check

  • Only change a gesture if it actually conflicts with Three Finger Drag on the target Mac. If Mission Control or App Exposé already uses four fingers, leave it unchanged.

Undo the change

  • In Trackpad Options, turn off “Use trackpad for dragging” or restore the previous dragging style, then click OK.

  • Return to Trackpad > More Gestures and restore the Mission Control and App Exposé gestures you recorded before the change.
