Adjust trackpad tracking speed

Increase pointer speed to suit your control preference. The third position from the right is this guide’s suggested starting point, not a universal setting.

Steps

  1. Take a screenshot of the current Tracking speed slider or record its position.
  2. Open System Settings.
  3. Click Trackpad in the sidebar, then click Point & Click.
  4. As a personal starting point, move the Tracking speed slider to the third position from the right, leaving two positions to its right.
  5. Test the pointer in Finder, a browser, or across a large display. If you regularly overshoot targets, move the slider one position to the left.

Before

At a lower Tracking speed, moving the pointer across a large display requires more finger movement.

After

At the guide’s suggested starting point, the pointer travels farther for the same finger movement. This is a personal workflow recommendation, not an Apple default or official recommendation.

Undo the change

  • Return to Trackpad > Point & Click and restore the Tracking speed slider using your screenshot or note.
